BOSTON — Robert Williams made his return to TD Garden for the first time since the Boston Celtics traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jrue Holiday. Williams became a fan-favorite and was a big part of Boston’s lineup with his massive blocks.Williams was given a loud cheer when the jumbotron welcomed him back. He waved to the crowd, but there was no video tribute and he was given the same kind of welcome back as Malcolm Brogdon, who was also traded to Portland for Holiday. But The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach spoke to a Celtics official who said Williams asked the team not to do a video. It’s unclear why he didn’t want one.Williams spent his first five NBA seasons with the Celtics after being selected by Boston in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. He was hindered by injuries, though, that likely kept him from reaching hill potential with the Celtics.Williams played in a career-high 61 games during the 2021-22 season, but played in just 35 last year.As his luck would have it, Williams’ fresh start in Portland has been limited to just six games after he suffered a torn ligament in his right knee after a collision with Jaren Jackson Jr.He underwent surgery in November and is expected to be fully healthy for the 2024-25 season.Highly anticipated sportsbooks like BetMGM Massachusetts, along with Caesars Sportsbook Massachusetts have been live since Spring of 2023.
