Phil Mickelson has no problem voicing his opinion on any topic in golf, but on Sunday he took something away regarding major championships.
In the midst of a T-22 at LIV Golf Singapore, Mickelson responded to a tweet about the lack of LIV golfers on the championship’s main course, saying that “with more big one players joining LIV next year,” all four tournaments could be in trouble. He ended his message with “FAAFO,” an acronym for “Fuck You and Find Out.”
The six-time major champion responded to a tweet from @flushingitgolf, saying the new league’s “first priority” should be giving players access to golf’s four biggest events. Currently, the main route is through the Official World Golf Ranking, but he is not yet allowed to compete in LIV. “Maybe some of the LIV players are too good to pass up,” Mickelson wrote in a now-deleted post. “But what happens if none of the LIV players play? Will they be lonely? What will happen next year with more great players? Or next year? At some point they’re going to have to get interested and respond to sponsors and TV. FAAFO.
Mickelson is one of many his LIV associates to express dissatisfaction with the current system. Current LIV Player of the Year Talor Gooch has been particularly vocal as he has yet to qualify for a major tournament in 2024 despite winning three LIV events in 2023.
There is. And Gooch recently announced that he will not try to qualify for the U.S. Open.
Mickelson, 53, received a five-year exemption from all tournaments for winning the 2021 PGA Championship. Former PGA champion, masters, open championship, he exempts life from these three adults (60 years later championship opening).
After marking the head with OWGR for several years, LIV betting on the world memo in March. The next major tournament, the PGA Championship, will be held at Valhalla later this month. LIV golfer Brooks Koepka is the defending champion.
