Michael van Gerwen calls opponent a ‘part-time player’ ahead of European Championship clash

Michael van Gerwen has caused a stir ahead of his European Championship clash with Gary Anderson by calling him a ‘part-time player’ ahead of their scheduled clash on Saturday.

The darts titans are set to reignite their intense rivalry in the second round of the tournament in Dortmund, Germany, this weekend, promising a thrilling encounter for fans.

Van Gerwen held no back in his pre-match comments, taking aim at Anderson but also acknowledging his prowess, saying: ‘We all know Gary Anderson, one of the best players I’ve ever seen in my life.

But he works part time. Therefore, I have to make the right choice and bet on my game.

Despite the jibe, Van Gerwen expressed respect for Anderson’s abilities, yet remained bullish about his chances, adding:”Gary is always going to be a blockbuster. Whether you have a good or bad game, it’s always going to be a tense game

He continued to outline the competitive spirit between them: “We don’t want to lose to each other. We really know each other. I feel comfortable. I’m in good form and I know I can hurt him at the right time.”

This latest chapter adds to the storied history of the Van Gerwen vs Anderson match, which began in 2017 when the pair clashed in the World Championship final, with Van Gerwen winning 7-3.

The nickname “The Part-Timer” has stuck in Anderson’s mind in the darts world, with Van Gerwen explaining the reason for the veteran’s unflattering moniker earlier last year.
