After a one-year delay, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy-sponsored TGL will kick off on January 7. TGL is a primetime golf league in which six teams of four players compete in fast-paced team golf and was founded in 2022 by TMRW Sports of Woods and Rory McIlroy in partnership with the PGA Tour.
The technology-based virtual golf league was originally scheduled to begin in January 2024, but a storm last November caused extensive damage to the inflatable dome roof of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where the tournament was scheduled to be played.
It has since been rebuilt with a steel structure capable of withstanding hurricane-force winds.
TGL’s indoor facility now spans approximately 150,000 square feet, with players hitting shots from the grass to a 46-by-64-foot screen and greens and bunkers built throughout the facility.
Up to 1,500 fans will be in attendance for the matches, which will be televised on ESPN. Six teams are set to compete in the TGL: Los Angeles Golf Club, Atlanta Drive Golf Club, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club.
Woods is set to compete for Jupiter Links, while McIlroy will play for Boston Common.
The 48-year-old Woods, who underwent back surgery in September and has played a limited schedule in recent years due to injuries, is co-owner of Jupiter Links Golf Club, a team that includes himself, Max Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner.
New York GC and The Bay GC will face off in their TGL debut on Jan. 7. New York is led by Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler and stars Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young, while The Bay GC is made up of Ludwig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Minwoo Lee and Shane Lowry. Before each TGL match, each team nominates three players to compete in a 15-hole contest.
The contest consists of two sessions, consisting of nine holes of three-player alternating shots followed by six holes of single head-to-head play.
Jupiter Links will play Los Angeles GC on January 14th. Woods’ team includes Max Homa, Tom Kim and Kevin Kisner. LAGC members include Collin Morikawa, Sahit Tigara, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood.
Atlanta Drive GC will make its debut at the NYGC on January 21st. The Atlanta franchise is made up of Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover.
Boston Common will play its first tournament at Jupiter Links on January 27 and will feature McIlroy as well as Hideki Matsuyama, Keegan Bradley and Australian Adam Scott.
