Despite their 32-point effort in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers are struggling to score points in 2024 as the offense regularly stalls on the run and kicker Chris Boswell has to save several.
Entering Week 6, the Steelers were averaging just 18.4 points per game. You could also pick the 32-point effort against the Raiders, as lower-ranked Las Vegas routinely gave Pittsburgh points through errors.
Fortunately, Boswell was in top form this season, making 16 of 17 field goals and all 11 of his extra points. But he is also nearly outscoring the entire rest of the team combined.
Boswell has scored a total of 58 points by himself through six games with his 16 field goals and 10 extra points.
Meanwhile, the entire offense has totaled 66 points with 11 touchdowns, an average of just under two per game.
In Week 6, Boswell almost singlehandedly outscored the rest of the team.
The veteran scored four baskets and two extra points for a total of 14 points. The Steelers’ offense went ahead three times and scored another 18 points. Boswell dominated Pittsburgh’s offense until Najee Harris’ 36-yard touchdown run with 4:21 left in the third quarter.
Boswell’s statistics are yet another stark reminder of why the Steelers will have to rely on Russell Wilson at some point. Justin Fields isn’t the Steelers’ biggest offensive problem, but he’s certainly not playing at a level that would cement him as a starter for the rest of the season.
Pittsburgh will beat less talented teams with the current formula that Fields has in place, but the Steelers will need more if they want to have a chance against better teams.
