Camila Giorgi beamed as she enjoyed her first WTA victory in nearly two years against Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson, beating her 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 at the 2023 Mérida Open Akron in Mexico.

The match lasted two hours and 23 minutes and followed wins over No 4 seed Katerina Siniakova in the semi-final and No 2 seed Sloane Stephens in the quarter-final in the WTA 250 competition.

The No 46 player, who is 31, has now won four of her 10 career WTA finals and had not experienced triumph on the tour since the Canadian Open in August 2021.

But, given that the total prize pool is only about £200,000, it won’t have a significant impact on her nearly $5 million in career earnings.

Giorgi is a tennis professional who represents Italy. Her career-high singles position of No 26 was attained on October 22, 2018. She is now ranked number 2 in Italy, behind Martina Trevisan.

Giorgi made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships after winning her maiden ITF title in 2009. In just her second major participation, Giorgi advanced to the Wimbledon tournament’s fourth round. She debuted in the top 100 of the WTA rankings after her impressive performance at the championships.

Born in Macerata, Italy, her father was drafted in Argentina in 1982 and fought in the Falklands War against the British, while her mother is a fashion designer. Now, her father coaches her full-time while her mother designs her dresses for tennis matches.

The tennis player is already well known to her 683,000 Instagram followers as she combines her day job with life as a lingerie model.

Alongside images of her tennis exploits, Giorgi regularly posts shots from her lingerie and fashion shoots on Instagram.

Her brother Amadeus, a former footballer who now owns the clothing company Giomila, shares her enthusiasm for sport and fashion.
