When the breakaway league began recruiting golfers in 2022, it hurt the prestigious PGA Tour and led to strong fan backlash. However, golfers continued to change golf courses due to financial incentives associated with the Saudi-backed Masters tournament.
Currently, European players heading to LIV are disqualified from the rider container, and measures are being put in place to prevent more players from leaving the PGA Tour, since not all players can win an OWGR round. It’s fine for now, but in the future it could lead to a mass exodus, with players unable to compete in all four major tournaments. But Simpson, the defending US Open winner, remained committed to a PGA visit, although he acknowledged that the six golfers could bounce back quickly. Like everyone else, the American is convinced that he will have to connect to Q School or connect another visit, as he acknowledges that the size of the field is an issue at the moment. Simpson said Golf Week:
“What we are really talking about is the six players (this is attractive for the visit). The rest is when we go to Q-SCHOOL or do something on the DP world tour. is needed.
He nominated those who have serious exceptions in Phil Michelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson de Humbo, Brooks Corpa, John Lam and Cam Smith. Simpson acknowledges that the size of the field is a challenge at the moment, which is why he’s finding it hard for people who have completed their LIV visit to find a way back.
Looking at the return coordinates he said:
“It’s just a head scratcher because someone’s going to lose out here. “Someone has to lose to figure this out,” said Simpson, who recently voiced his belief that the 156-player pool is “terrible” and should be trimmed to 144 to ensure the quality of the product.
He added:
“So, it’s hard to think about taking places away from guys, definitely, but as far as the road to getting LIV people back, if LIV goes two long, there’s five or six guys who will kind of get absolved, without exception, and two of them, Phil (Mickelson) and Dustin (Johnson), are lifetime members.” And then we had some guys that were heavily exempt like Bryson (DeChambeau), Brooks (Kopka), Rahm, Cam Smith. So I don’t know how this is going to work. “That’s where I think as board members and player executives we need to come back down to earth a little bit and talk to the players and see how they feel. No doubt they will be furious from the start if we let them know that we are demanding the return of these people. “If LIV doesn’t continue, I think a lot of people won’t have to go to Q School, you know, they’ll quit golf, they’ll finish their careers. This is where my head is.
With 2023 coming to a close and Rahm recently trading with the PGA and LIV, there was speculation that this visit would be consolidated, putting an end to the backlash experienced by several players and many fans. A deadline was set but then canceled, and negotiations are still ongoing regarding a possible deal. LIV offered an understanding, but because the PGA visit was peaceful, they agreed to a speculative deal with the Vital Sports Bunch that would give players access to more than $1.5 billion worth of assets as part of the PGA’s visit, a creative deal that hasn’t been struck recently and comes at a time when the long-term prospects of several LIV stars are uncertain. For most golfers, tournaments such as the Experts and the U.S. Open are the highlight of each season, but some top golfers feel their futures are over if their LIV performances are not recognised higher in the world rankings.
