Camila Giorgi’s lawyers have issued a statement in response to the tennis star’s sudden retirement and departure from Italy amidst an investigation by Italian financial authorities concerning £400,000 in unpaid taxes.
Despite reports suggesting she fled to avoid questioning, her legal team clarified that her retirement had been planned for months due to the stress of competitive play, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
They emphasized that her departure was temporary and motivated by personal family issues, not an attempt to evade the investigation. Giorgi, who last competed in Miami and did not enter the French Open, has assured her return to Italy to address the tax matters and any other inquiries from the authorities.
