Simone Biles wins ninth national all-around title at U.S. gymnastics championships
FORT WORTH — Simone Biles won her ninth national all-around title with a dominant showing Sunday night at the U.S. gymnastics championships. Over two days of competition, Biles hardly wavered as she built a massive advantage with a score that soared nearly six points above the next-best gymnast.
There are two emotional support dogs hanging out with the gymnasts, who are finding out whether they have advanced to the Olympic trials.
USA Gymnastics announced that Shilese Jones and Kaliya Lincoln — who both scratched national championships — will be able to compete at Olympic trials. Jones has been the second-best all-arounder in the United States after Simone Biles for the past couple of years, and Lincoln has high floor scores that could be useful for Team USA.
Very nice floor routine from Sunisa Lee to finish out the night — she opened with a beautiful double layout stuck cold. She earns a 13.350. Despite the fall on vault earlier today, Lee is in a great position: She finishes fourth in the all-around, and has a lot of potential to upgrade on bars for Olympic trials.
Skye Blakely just delivered a clutch beam performance in her last routine here at the U.S. championships. She has been inconsistent on beam at international competitions — but today, she held it together for a 14.200 despite a few small wobbles and missed connections. She will finish second in the all-around, a big statement for her Olympic team chances.
Jordan Chiles started the evening with a fall on beam, but after that mistake, she delivered three strong routines. She scores a 14.500 on bars.
