Even McLaren team principal Andrea Stella couldn’t believe how fast Lando Norris drove to beat Max Verstappen by a whopping 7.612 seconds at the Miami Grand Prix.
Norris, 24, earned his first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix win on Sunday, benefitting from a mid-race safety car which allowed him to pit at the perfect time and chart an insurmountable lead over Verstappen. Red Bull’s three-time world champion was powerless to stop Norris, who drove superbly in an upgraded McLaren.
Team boss Stella was confident that their car would be able to give Red Bull a run for their money but didn’t realise just how good the outcome would be. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Italian engineer admitted: “We knew that the car was quick, [although] it’s a bit of a surprise. But we take it positively and we take it for the future as well.”
