Tiger Woods, a legendary figure in the world of golf with an impressive 15 major championship titles to his name, including three victories at the prestigious US Open, has been granted a special exemption to compete in the 124th edition of the US Open Championship. This decision was officially announced by the United States Golf Association (USGA), marking a significant moment in Woods’ storied career.
Woods’ acceptance of the special exemption comes after he failed to qualify for the US Open for the first time in his professional journey. His recent years have been marred by injuries, leading to a limited schedule of play. The expiration of his five-year exemption following his dramatic triumph at The Masters in 2019 left him without an automatic entry into the tournament. Unlike other major championships, the US Open offers a 10-year exemption to its former champions.
With his return to competitive action at the US Open, Woods will reignite his quest for glory at an event he holds dear. His previous triumphs at the US Open came in 2000, 2002, and 2008, showcasing his dominance on the grand stage of American golf. The 48-year-old golf icon last participated in the tournament in 2020, making his upcoming appearance at Pinehurst No 2 a highly anticipated event, especially for fans eagerly awaiting his return.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Woods remarked, “The US Open, our national championship, is a truly special event for our game and one that has helped define my career.” He went on to convey his excitement for competing in this year’s tournament, particularly at Pinehurst, a venue steeped in golf history and significance.
As Woods prepares to tee off once again at the US Open, the golfing world awaits with anticipation, eager to witness another chapter unfold in the remarkable journey of one of the sport’s greatest icons.
