Every golfer, regardless of skill level – be it from professional champions to ordinary players who hit in the 90’s – recognizes how one effective swing thought can make a difference. Such an idea has tremendous potential and may unleash facets of your game that you believed were beyond redemption.
Annika Sorenstam, who was dominating the LPGA Tour in the early 2000s, served as a playing editor for Golf Digest. In December of 2006 issue she revealed an effective putting technique that contributed to her success throughout the season when she won U.S. Women’s Open.
“The secret to my successful putting is focusing on bringing my right elbow straight back from the target during the stroke,” Sorenstam explained. “This technique ensures that I’m keeping the putter in line and gives me a better chance of making contact with a square face.”
In her writing, she emphasizes the significance of achieving a square face when making contact. Regardless of having the proper trajectory and velocity, hitting the ball with anything but a square face leads to inconsistent shots that deviate from your intended putt path. This ultimately reduces your chances of success on putting greens.
An important aspect of your setup that you should focus on to help hit the ball squarely was also shared by Sorenstam.
“The crucial thing when addressing the ball is to align your shoulders with the direction you intend to putt,” stated Sorenstam.
To achieve consistent contact with your putter, it is crucial to align the shoulders correctly and concentrate on moving the right elbow directly away from the target. By doing so, you can effectively minimize any unnecessary movements in your hands and wrists throughout the stroke.
