On Wednesday night, Graham Coffey of The Players Lounge released a report stating that Georgia State had chosen Dell McGee as their new head coach. According to the news, this position opened up after Shawn Elliott departed to assume roles in South Carolina’s run game coordination and tight end coaching team.
Though there has been little verification from either the schools or McGee himself, should the report prove accurate, Georgia will need to find new coordinators for both its running and passing plays. This is due in part to Bryan McClendon’s recent departure as wide receivers coach for a position at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Over his eight-year tenure in Athens, McGee trained a multitude of exceptional running backs including Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield.Dawgs led by Noah Thomasson defeat Vandy.

Georgia Football hires new running backs coach Josh Crawford
Josh Crawford is the new running backs coach for Georgia Football, taking over from long-serving Dell McGee who recently vacated the role to become Head Coach of the Georgia State Panthers.
Crawford, who had been coaching at Georgia Tech since 2023, was an easy pick for Kirby Smart as his new assistant. Before joining the Yellow Jackets’ staff, Crawford served as Western Kentucky’s co-offensive coordinator and coached receivers in 2021 through to 2022.
Although Crawford is a novice in college football coaching, he had extensive experience as a pro in Georgia High School coaching. For 11 seasons, Crawford coached at several of the most well-known schools for high school football in Georgia.
Beginning in 2010 through to 2012, Crawford was a coach at Greater Atlanta Christian and specialized as a running backs and tight ends coach. Following that, he became an associate head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach for Jefferson County H.S in the year of 2013.
From 2014-2016, Crawford served as coach at Colquitt County and led the team to victory in two state championships along with a high school national championship win in 2015. Later on, he shifted his coaching expertise to Lee County H.S for the year of 2017 where he claimed yet another statewide title. At Lee County, Crawford took charge of pass game coordination and also coached wide receivers during this tenure.
From 2018 to 2019, Crawford served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Valdosta High School. He later joined Colquitt County High School in 2020 where he held a position of co-offensive coordinator before leaving his last high school coaching role.
There were several names tossed around regarding the potential replacement for Dell McGee as running backs coach; however, Crawford’s name was never brought up. Initially, I felt a tinge of annoyance when his name surfaced since I wasn’t familiar with him beforehand. But upon reviewing his credentials, I am convinced that he is an excellent addition to the team.
As a college student, Crawford was Moorehouse’s running back. He pursued his Master’s degree at Georgia in 2012. Additionally, he has coached several eminent high schools across Georgia and the southeast region.
Given Crawford’s exceptional recruiting abilities as well as his impressive background, it is no surprise that he stands out amongst Georgia’s top recruiters. Furthermore, the fact that fellow Tech enthusiasts express relief on social media regarding him not coaching at Georgia underscores his significance in this role.
The fact that Kirby Smart successfully recruited a coach from a smaller team only adds to the value of this outstanding hire. This decision will undoubtedly have positive effects on in-state recruiting efforts.
